Go on a Style Intuition Discovery Tour

Anything that appeals to you innately (don't worry about practicality!), add to your Mood Board. You can use Pinterest, Instagram or any social media as well as magazines or blogs. Look for inspirations throughout your world including your home and art that you love . You can also include any celebrity style inspirations here too. Snap a photo and upload it here.

Find a broader selection of items to assess by exploring blogs, social media, magazines, and more.  You could even,  hit the shops. No, you’re not actually going shopping. This is just a discovery tour. Take pictures of items you love, even if you are not sure why.

Pick Your Favorites

Odds are that if I asked you to pick your three favorite pieces, you could walk to your closet and pull them out immediately. Don’t think about the occasion or the season Whether it’s your favorite winter coat or a pair of high heels you wish you could wear every day Your go-to pieces that you know always “work” and make you feel great.

More broadly, think about your favorite things. Do you love large earrings? Tropical patterns? A specific time in history like Victorian or mod? These are also a piece of your style and likely influence or are reflected in the way you dress. And this doesn’t have to apply to clothing and accessories only. Hair and makeup tastes can also indicate your style. Maybe you prefer sleek hairstyles, like low-slung ponytails and chignons. Or maybe you prefer a wild mane of loose locks.

You can even look beyond fashion completely. Consider interior design. Whether you live in a studio apartment or a four-bedroom family home, there is probably some sense of style to how you decorate your space. Do you like oversized, plush furniture? Do you prefer minimalist, Scandinavian-inspired pieces? Is a fluffy area rug your thing or do you prefer bare hardwood floors? When you picked your kitchen backsplash, did you opt for something plain in a muted hue or colorful tiles? Look at interior design catalogs and social media feeds. Whichever route you take, it can be helpful to take it out of context from clothing, precisely because our relationships to clothing can be so personal and complicated.

These details give you a peek at your personal style.  Write these down or find a photo that represents each favorite.

Study Your Fashion Heroes

, look at the people around you, both fictional and real-world. Do you have a fashion hero? It could be an influencer. It could be a Hollywood star. It could be a character in a TV show. It does not matter if they look like you or share your body architecture or palette or anything like that. It’s just someone who you consider fashionable. Every time you see them, you think, “Gosh, they look stylish.” That could well be one of your fashion heroes.

Google images of that person and, again, look for patterns in what they wear. Maybe it’s a movie star who wears a lot of voluminous ballgowns on the red carpet and frilly summer dresses in everyday life. Or maybe it’s a TV character known for his sharply cut suits and matching cufflinks. Or maybe it’s an influencer with a bit of a boho vibe, often wearing flowing skirts and oversized earrings. Whoever your fashion hero is,collect images of anything you love.

The Anti-Mood Board

Figuring out what you like is just as much a matter of figuring out what you don’t like. Often, this is the easy part! You can make an anti-mood- board if you want, using the various steps above. Highlight all the things that make you say, “Thanks, but not for me.” My anti-mood- board would include everything from flouncy baby-pink dresses to frilly white lace bedspreads—all things that are, for my personal style, too stereotypically feminine.

All of these things that you are drawn to visually point toward your natural style inclinations. Identifying patterns across these various areas, whether it’s your own wardrobe or interior design elements or historical eras, will help you get in touch with that personal style. We will explore this more in the module.
